It was the practice of the Church of Geneva during John Calvin's tenure, beginning in 1549, to sing through the entire Psalter in order. The Genevan Psalter published that year included a "Table for finding the Psalms, according to the order in which they are sung in the church of Geneva," which has been reproduced by Pierre Pidoux. Wes Bredenhof recently posted an informative article about the
Genevan Psalm-Singing "Lectionary" on his blog. One may also read about this table and its relevance to the question of what was sung in Genevan worship in Sherman Isbell's article on
The Singing of Psalms.
