He is No Fool

Did Jim Elliot read the life of Philip Henry? The October 28, 1949 entry found in Elisabeth Elliot, ed., The Journals of Jim Elliot, p. 174, contains Elliot's most famous aphorism: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose."

Matthew Henry's biography of his father Philip, The Life of the Rev. Philip Henry, p. 35, records a saying that is most similar: "He is no fool who parts with that which he cannot keep, when he is sure to be recompensed with that which he cannot lose."

  1. Interesting. I had always thought that was Jim Elliot's original quote, as it is never attributed to anyone but him. That is very interesting, how similar it is to Mr. Henry's.
