First Scottish Covenant

According to Thomas M'Crie the Elder, Life of John Knox in his Works, Vol. 1, p. 88 (1855 ed.), the first Scottish covenant was a bond, or solemn engagement, entered to in 1556 by John Knox, John Erksine of Dun (for whom this covenant derived its name) and other gentlemen from The Mearns, in which they covenanted to shun Popish idolatry and seek after the pure preaching of the gospel. Although the document that was signed is not extant (John Knox is the primary historical source of information about it), the 1556 Dun Covenant preceded the more well-known Edinburgh covenant of December 3, 1557 by one year.
