Calvinator

Besides the famous Calvinus beer, which can only be obtained in Switzerland so far as I know, and which I have both sampled and enjoyed, there is another brand closer to home, which bears tribute to John Calvin, at least in its nickname: the Fordham Doppelbock Calvinator. Brewed in Dover, Delaware, in strict accordance with the Reinheitsgebot (the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516), it can be purchased in select mid-Atlantic stores, but is available on tap only at the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis and Savage, MD. It is described by one bartender as a "dark rich ale, with a chocolate, coffee liquorish sweeter flavor." Elsewhere, it has been described as having a "malty nose, chocolate malt flavor, [and] finish[ing] sweet with caramel flavors." It is a seasonal winter brew, and is served at the Ram's Head Tavern in Savage in November and in Annapolis in December. I read a beer guide in which the reason given for the name of the brew was: "Calvinists would love this beer if they tried it." It is a smooth, full-bodied dark lager, which I have finally sampled and would enjoy sharing with friends who would raise a glass with me to John Calvin.
