Totam Applica

In his Preface to the smaller Greek text of the New Testament, Johann Albrecht Bengel wrote a rule to be followed by the student of scripture (which, as Edwards A. Park wrote in 1873, "To a layman as a well as a clergyman is the maxim applicable"): "Te totam applica and textum; rem totam applica ad te" ("Apply thyself wholly to the text; apply the subject wholly to thyself").
