Puritan Sweet Tooth

Cotton Mather, speaking of his grandfather, John Cotton, wrote of his practice to read John Calvin before bedtime (Magnalia Christi Americana I:250):

Even such a Calvinist was our Cotton! Said he, I have read the fathers and the school-men, and Calvin too; but I find, that he that has Calvin has them all. And being asked, why in his latter days he indulged nocturnal studies more than formerly, he pleasantly replied, Because I love to sweeten my mouth with a piece of Calvin before I go to sleep.
